Apply For Passport Online: A How-To Guide

There are many ways in today’s modern world to apply for a passport. In the past, you would have to go through a set of procedures and would have to appear in person to complete your application. Today that is not the case. With the advent of the Internet, many things that used to require you to leave the house and actually go somewhere are taking place online. Your passport is no exception. All you have to do to get started is using any search engine, just type: apply for passport. You will be on your way.

There are a couple things you must keep in mind before proceeding with your application. Although you can handle the process online in most cases, you must appear in person to complete the application if this is your first US passport, you are under the age of 16, your passports was loss, stolen or damaged, or your last passport was issued more than 15 years ago. If you do not fit any of these criteria you may apply and get your passport online.

One more important thing to consider is the amount of time it takes to actually receive your passport. If you are planning your travel in a short time period or need to leave the country in a hurry, you will need to plan ahead. It can sometimes take up to 4 weeks for your application to be reviewed and approved. So if timing is a factor you must be sure to start the process as soon as possible.

While there are many web sites you can use for obtaining such a document, the United States Post Office is usually a good place to start. They have all the necessary forms in an easy to find and download location on their site. All of their forms are easy to understand and complete, and they do this all the time. They can be considered experts at the process which can help to speed things up if you are in a hurry.

There are sites that do offer expedited services for extra fees however. So if you are really in a hurry you can always research some of them and find a company that fits your needs better than the USPS. Regardless of who you are going to use, there are forms that must be completed. The USPS web site does list the forms in one place so they are easy to find and download. Once you have the forms completed you can either bring them in to complete the process, or upload them to the site of your choosing.

To obtain a US passport there are a myriad of forms and identification that you must show in order to prove your citizenship. This is something that you must do in order to get one. Once you have all of your forms downloaded and completed, and gathered all your identification you will be ready to visit your local office. This is something everyone must do unless you will use a strictly online service.

If you choose to use a service that does everything online, and you fit the criteria to use such a service be prepared to pay a little bit extra. In order to have the convenience of not leaving the house to get this done you will have to pay for it. In addition, you will also need two pictures of yourself. One of yourself from the front and one of your profile. These will both be used inside your passport to identify you.

If using an online service, yours will be mailed to you once all requirements have been met. If not, then once you visit your local office and turn in your application and necessary documents, you will be notified in a few weeks once it is in. You can then go back to pick it up. Regardless of how you apply for passport, you will need to be prepared to spend at least $100 and sometimes more for the service. If online, expect to pay a bit more for the service. Either way the process will take a couple weeks to complete but you will get the same end result. Getting this done is easy in today’s world. Just another example of how technology has made our lives a little easier.
